MEMORIES OF ST AGNES - 1947 - 1954

 

PEOPLE I REMEMBER:

SISTER “RITA ANN” - THE BEST NUN THERE EVER WAS.

SISTER ‘DOROTHY’ AND HER REAL SISTER - TWO LOUSEY NUNS; BAMBOO STICK IN THE LIBRARY.

SISTER ‘JOSEPHUS’ - WINDOW POLE AND TOILET PAPER STICKING OUT OF HER MOUTH.

SISTER ‘BASIL’ FROM THE INFIRMARY. COD LIVER OIL AND VITAMINS.

TARRY & ROCCO TARANTINO - TWO REALLY GREAT PEOPLE; GREAT BASEBALL PLAYERS, (HITTERS - THEY WOULD HIT IT OVER THE SHOP BUILDING). ROCCO WAS IN CHARGE OF THE LAUNDRY AND I CAN SPEND A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT THAT.

MR. FITZGERALD - DROVE BUS ON OUTINGS AND ALWAYS

 SEEMED TO KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING. HE WAS A PREFECT.

MR. GARY - I REMEMBER HIM HITTING US ON THE HEAD WITH HIS BIG RING. HIS NAME COULD HAVE BEEN GARRITY. HE IS IN PICTURE OF FOOTBALL TEAM AS A COACH.

COACH JIM FAULK - I REMEMBER HIM AS THE ONE WHO PADDLED US IN THE EQUIPMENT ROOM.

 

MEMORIES - IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER OR CONTENT :

WATCHING ‘FARMER GRAY CARTOONS’ AND ‘MILTON BERLE’ ON TV IN SCHOOL AUDITORIUM ON A LITTLE B/W TV SET. PROBABLY 13 INCH. ALSO WATCHED ‘BANDSTAND’, ‘HIT PARADE’, ‘MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE’.  

HAVING TO WATCH “MONSIGNOR FULTON J SHEEN” EVERY WEEK.

HAVING TO SAY THE ROSARY EVERY NIGHT IN MAY IN FRONT OF THE STATUE OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES BY THE BASEBALL FIELD.

PASSING THE EIGHTH GRADE AND RECEIVING A “REGENTS” DIPLOMA. SEEMS YOU HAD TO BE FROM NEW YORK TO APPRECIATE WHAT IT WAS.

SLEEPING IN THE COTTAGES AND LISTENING TO THE OLDIES ON RADIO SUCH AS ‘INNER SANCTUM”, “THE LONE RANGER”, “THE SHADOW”.


THE SCHEDULE IN THE SUMMER WHEN WE GOT TO GO TO ‘BEAR MOUNTAIN’, ‘LAKE TIORATI’, ‘LAKE SEBAGO’, ‘FORTY FOOT’, ‘TALLMAN MOUNTAIN PARK’, ‘RYE BEACH’.

POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE TAKING US TO ‘PALISADES AMUSEMENT PARK’ EVERY YEAR.           

GOING ON TRIPS “UP THE MOUNTAIN”. MAKING OUR OWN LITTLE PICNICS, FRYING BALONEY. I REMEMBER FALLING OUT OF THE ‘KINGS CHAIR’.

GOING TO NYACK TO THE MOVIES IN THE BUS.

TELEPHONE COMPANY GIVING US A BOX OF HARD CANDY AND A PEN & PENCIL SET EVERY CHRISTMAS.

HAVING “PARLOR” DOWN AT COTTAGES IF WEATHER WAS FAIR OR AT THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM IF RAINING.

ICE SKATING AND HOCKEY ON THE LAKE. FELL IN ON THIN ICE- WENT TO CLOSE TO DUCKS.

BEAN PICKING IN PARSIPPANY NEW JERSEY “COGER FARMS”. WE WOULD BE HERDED LIKE CATTLE IN THEIR TRUCKS WITH NO WINDOWS. WE GOT .25 A BUSHEL.

WORKED IN LITTLE OR OLD REF DOWNSTAIRS. IT HAD PULLEY RAMP UP TO KITCHEN AND TILE FLOORS.

SLEIGH RIDING ON TH “HILL” WITH SHEETS OF CARDBOARD AND ANY FLAT PIECE OF WOOD OR PLASTIC THAT WE COULD FIND. I WENT DOWN ON ICE SKATES.

ROLLER SKATING ON THE “RINK” NEAR THE SHOP BUILDING. I BROKE MY COLLAR BONE JUMPING OVER TWO BOARDS FOR DISTANCE.

CANDY ROOM ON SECOND FLOOR.

BLACKTOP PATH TO NOVITIATE.

CAMP SHANKS DUMP ACROSS THE ROAD AND THROUGH WOODS FOLLOWING A LARGE SEWER PIPE. WE WOULD GO TO THE DUMP LOOKING FOR “GOOD STUFF”.  

STANDING NEXT TO THE “TREE”. BEING PUNISHED.

SWINGING ON THE PIPES (COVERED WITH ASBESTOS) IN DOWNSTAIRS PLAYROOM. THIS WAS NEXT TO WASH ROOM (LONG SINK) WHICH WAS NEXT TO TOILET THAT COULD BE ENTERED FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE.

HANGING AROUND THE CANDY STORE IN SPARKILL. PLAYING PINBALL MACHINES AND JUKE BOX. ALSO HAD ‘EGG CREAMS’ AND ‘BLT’S’.

CADDYING AT DELLWOOD COUNTRY CLUB. HAD TO HITCH HIKE TO GET THERE. WE GOT $3.00 PER BAG.

CADDYING AT ROCKLAND COUNTRY CLUB. THIS WAS JUST UP THE ROAD FROM TALLMAN MTN. PARK. JUST OVER THE VIADUCT. WE GOT $3.00 PER BAG.

HANGING OUT AT A DINER IN ORANGEBURG. PLAYED GUN TARGET MACHINES AND JUKE BOX.

ROLLER SKATING AT RINK IN ORANGEBURG. 


HANGING OUT AT CANDY STORE IN PIERMONT AT LUNCH TIME WHEN I WENT TO TAPPAN ZEE H.S. WATCHED OTHER PEOPLE PLAY PINBALL MACHINES.

GOING SWIMMING AT “FORT COMFORT” (COMFORT INN) IN PIERMONT.(HUDSON RIVER).

GOING SWIMMING OFF THE PIER AT “ROBERT GAIR PAPER BOARD AND FOLDING CARTONS”.

GOOFING OFF ON THE ROOF. THE PICTURES I SENT SHOW THAT.

SMOKING AT THE COAL BIN BETWEEN SCHOOL AND LAUNDRY YARD.

PLAYING DODGE BALL IN DOWNSTAIRS PLAYROOM.

PLAYING EVERY SPORT FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, SOCCOR, FIELD HOCKEY.

REMEMBER THE SWIMMING POOL THAT WAS AT BOTTOM OF HILL.

GOING IN THE WOODS BEHIND THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND STEALING THE MANS APPLES AND CHERRIES. I REMEMBER HIM FIRING A SHOT GUN AND US RUNNING THROUGH THE BRAMBLES OR BLACKBERRY THORNS AND GETTING ALL CUT UP.

PLAYING HANDBALL AND PADDLE BALL ON HANDBALL COURTS BEHIND SHOP BLDG.
