ST. AGNES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
SPRING 2014

The ANNUAL PICNIC is scheduled for SATURDAY, AUGUST 16, 2014 at the PIERMONT PAVILION beginning at 10:30 AM. Coffee and Donuts will be available for early arrivals. Again this year Sister Peggy Scarano has arranged for us to attend a Mass in memoriam for deceased and ailing alumni. It will be celebrated at the Chapel at the ST. AGNES MOTHERHOUSE AT 11:15 AM ON AUGUST 16, 2014. Unfortunately, Father Raymond Masterson, who passed away on March 16, 2014 will not be celebrating the mass this year.

LETTERS AND NOTES

Chance book winners at last years picnic were: Aislinn Mc Cabe, Angel Rondon, Kim Cipaln and Ray Babcock. The St. Agnes website (www.stagnesalumni.org) continues to be up and running. As is the FACEBOOK group site (currently 69 members) thanks again to David and Peter Feliciano. The FACEBOOK group has some members for whom we do not have addresses to send mailings: Ed Falterman, Michael Joy, Marilyn Dunn, Mary Hackett Bailey, Walter E. Schneider, Starsky Pelegrino, Tony Saraceno, Penelope Johnson Agramonte. If anyone knows the addresses for these members please let me know.

Good news regarding Ditty Naglieri, a great friend to St. Agnes kids, she is back home in Piermont recuperating, rehabbing and enjoying the Hudson river experience. She will be coming to the picnic with John Antonacci and his wife Aida.

Recently received a call from Joe Roche, now living in Virginia Beach, VA, regarding two buddies of his: George Diaz and Lorenzo Calderon, who are both seriously ailing. Joe graduated TZHS in 1955 and is very proud of his children's accomplishments and of his own work organizing running activities in and around New York. He had a hip replacement awhile back and has recovered successfully.

Tom O'Brien who has been in touch with some of the "younger" members of the association and wants to encourage participation in the association. Perhaps organize a brain-storming session at the picnic.

A thank you to Frank Pastore for the spiritual material (with a Franciscan flavor) he sent along to the association.

One our members spotted that Mike Rotundo, TZHS class of '54, was inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame last year and suggested I mention it in the newsletter. Since Mike was a classmate of mine I am happy to include a mention of that here.

Mike was a great character as a classmate in school as well as a wonderful athlete; his forte was basketball but at TZ in those days you played everything. I recall one day when Mike and I think Hubie Nealy and a couple of other guys played a pick up game (at Rockland State gym ?). Mike was competitive as a player even in a pick-up game, but he did show me a couple of his inside moves. Mike coached our student team for the student-teacher basketball game (which we won).

Since I mentioned Hubie Nealy above it also brings back my memory of catching for him during the `54 baseball season and experiencing what a "real" pitcher could throw. Just as in football and basketball Hubie was big, strong and tough as hell. Also a Rockand County Sports Hall of Famer.

And, as long as I am enjoying the memory of those extraordinary athletes who graduated Tappan Zee in 1954 how can I not mention Howie Pierson (a Charter Hall of Famer) who was a very special person. Smart, smooth, and talent galore; just the kind of athlete and person coaches must dream about. We had a very close relationship as center (me) and quarterback (he) for that undefeated football season in 1953.

Coaches Jim Faulk and Nick Mottola are also members of the Hall. Those two men who happened to coach me during my high school years had the greatest impact on my life of any two people I have ever encountered.
